Dr Gillian Granville

Gillian's photoDr Gillian Granville is Director of Gillian Granville Associates, a company that is committed to transferring policy and research findings into practical changes on the ground. This is achieved through carrying out realist style evaluations, developing evaluation frameworks and supporting strategy development and implementation planning in complex systems. The activities of the company are underpinned by a drive to improve health inequalities, enable social inclusion and promote social justice.

Gillian has a background as a nurse and health visitor working in the NHS for a number of years before moving into the community and voluntary sector. She was Head of Policy and Research at the Beth Johnson Foundation with the strategic lead across the charity on the design and implementation of innovative projects to address issues of ageing. Gillian is particularly known for her research and evaluation work on midlife adults and intergenerational practice in which she has published extensively.

She moved to the Health Development Agency in 2001 and led a national policy implementation programme on midlife adults. She then went to the Health Improvement Directorate in the Department of Health to lead the initial setting-up of the NHS Health Trainer and life checks initiatives. Prior to starting her company in 2006, Gillian spent a year at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement where she was responsible for a co-design project with patients, the public and practitioners to support service improvement.

Gillian has a doctorate in older women’s health and is a visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Research on Ageing, University of Southampton. She is a Senior Associate at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham.
