Person Centred Planning at Rampton
High Secure Hospital
As the NDT's lead consultant on forensic
services, Joan Maughan reports on work undertaken at Rampton
Hospital:
It was quite a challenge to be asked to
facilitate the development of Person Centred Planning for the
learning disability service at Rampton Hospital.
For many patients the dream was the easy bit
to get out of Rampton!!
The nature of this enclosed institution, where security is such
a high priority, is such that the first steps were to help the
staff to see people differently, as people first
and not simply as index offences. Then to enable
planning to support patients to begin a process through which
they were more empowered and engaged with plans for their lives
both inside Rampton and for a future beyond Rampton.
Over the last two years development has included the delivery
of Awareness and Facilitator training, problem solving through
mentoring, the production of plans and training the trainers.
The work was piloted within the mens service but will
progress to other areas. Key Components of Success:
|
|
|
Two
dedicated champions of Person Centred Planning have
emerged, Bev Beardsall and Linda Piercy. both now trainers in
their own right. Their determination and commitment has ensured
success. |
|
|
The
commitment of senior managers to ensure funds were available to
complete the training and to provide the trainers with dedicated
time and resources to develop the work. |
|
|
The
enthusiasm of patients to undertake person centre planning. |
|
|
The
enthusiasm of staff to undertake training. |
|
|
It
was decided early on that person-centred approaches should be
enabled to influence the Care Programme Approach rather than usurp
it. |
|
|
Recognising
and dealing with issues of risk through the process.
|
| The Results: |
 |

monitored and demonstrate real improvements/changes in peoples
day to day lives, their healthcare, their activities and their
behaviours. |

about people and their lives. |
