FAQs (frequently
asked questions)

Several
hundred people have now registered their copy of the
SIP. Inevitably, a proportion have reported
problems in installing or using the SIP. The great majority
of the problems are caused by the security settings
on the PC (usually an 'official' work PC). See below
for details.
This pages covers some specific
and common problems. Please also look at the latest
news page for resources to help you make use of
the SIP.

When I downloaded the SIP Installer I got alarming messages
about program files that could harm my computer. Should
I be worried?
|
| A. |
No. This is just your browser being interfering and
nannyish.
|
I followed the download and installation process, but
there's no sign of the SIP on my PC. |
| A |
We're fairly
sure that this problem - and sometimes the next one
(below) - is caused by the security set-up on your PC,
which is preventing installation. It is most likely
to occur on work-related PCs which have been deliberately
set to prevent staff loading their own software. If
that sounds like your PC, check with an IT support person.
(You could also look at the Security settings in your
browser - on Internet Explorer, they're at Internet
Options in the Tools menu - to see if they have been
set high.) You might also find it useful to install
the SIP on a private PC so that you can have a look
at it and decide whether it's worth trying to persuade
the IT Dept. that they should let you install it.
If you're getting
this problem on a private, non-networked PC, and haven't
changed the Security settings from their default level,
then we'd like to know about it. We may not be able
to do anything about it, but it could at least get us
closer to knowing what the problem is.
|
I followed the download and installation process, but
when I try to launch the SIP I get a message saying that
a file can't be found. |
| A |
This may have
the same cause as above - i.e. that your PC has security
settings that are blocking the SIP from installing or
working correctly.
However, if
you get messages during the installation process, saying
that a series of DLL files can't be found, the
reason may be that you have already installed the SIP
once and are attempting to overwrite it. When you've
clicked to get rid of all the messages and the installation
has aborted, try looking at the Programs listed from
your Start menu. It's very likely that you'll see Social
Inclusion Planner already listed - so there's no need
to repeat the installation.
If you really want to download again,
watch the options you are offered during installation
and change the folder where the SIP will be installed.

I'm trying to to register
my copy of the SIP. Where do I put the codes I've been
given? |
| A |
We hope the online registration
process, which shows you exactly where the two numbers
need to go, will make things completely clear. But in
case you've already registered -
The code that was displayed in the 'unregistered copy'
window when you launched the SIP goes in the FORENAME
box.
Leave the SURNAME box empty.
Put the 'password' (a mixture of letters and numbers
that you were given when you registered) in the PASSWORD
box. Make sure you type the letters in the password
in CAPITALS!
|
I've installed and registered my copy, and now I want
to see the strategies for inclusion. Where are they? |
| A |
The SIP is designed so that
the strategies assist planning with individuals, and for
this reason they are displayed on the Planner screen.
You get to this screeen by selecting 'Work on Plans',
and then creating details for the person you want to plan
with/for. If you're just trying out the SIP, you can put
in a fake name, and delete it later. (Deleting people
entered on the SIP is done on the Housekeeping screen,
accessed via 'Other Activities'.) |
I've got to the planner screen, but I can only see one
Strategy. How do I see the others? |
| A |
Click the Selector button, at the top
of the screen and towards the right-hand side. It looks
like this - |
|
 |
On the Selector window, a little blue blob appears against
some of the Strategies. What is it? |
| A |
It's supposed to mark the
currently selected Strategy. It isn't working quite as
it should, but it's harmless. |

PLEASE
USE THE ONLINE REGISTRATION FACILITY.
This new facility works for all versions of the SIP,
even if it says when you first open the SIP that you
need to phone to register.

| I put in the code
and password to register my copy, and started using the
SIP, but now I can't log in again. |
| A. |
When you completed the registration process you created
a new account on the SIP, using whatever name and password
you chose. This account is now the only way to access
your installed copy. To help keep your data secure,
the special account was deleted and can no longer be
used to access the SIP. (Once you have access through
the account you made in your own name, you can create
additional accounts for other people who want to use
the SIP.)
As far as we know, the SIP reliably stores accounts.
So the likelihood is that your are not entering the
account details. Are you sure you're putting in the
correct name and password? Alternatively, you may not
be using the same combination of CAPITALS and lower
case letters when you enter the password. The password
is case sensitive, so you need to get this right.
If you really can't figure out what account details
you entered, then the installed SIP is inaccessible
- and so useless. The only way forward is to download
and install a new copy.
|
| We want to use
the SIP on a network, so that people can log in from different
PCs and share the same data. Can we do this? |
| A |
If your network is set up the right way, it's possible
that you'll be able to access the SIP across the network.
But this version of the SIP is not intended to be used
in this way, and you'll hit problems as soon as more
than one person tries to access it.
However, we are in the process
of developing a multi-user version of the SIP.
It will be a much more sophisticated piece of software,
with the capacity to share data across several hundred
networked PCs.
For technical reasons the multi-user version will involve
some costs, and an organisation making this commitment
is also likely to want a customised version, with some
support for installation and maintenance. On the other
hand we have already been in contact with organisations
who see the SIP is a key component and everyday working
tool for services focused on social inclusion.
If you'd like to know more about the multi-user version,
please contact Steve
Dowson.
