Risk Assessment and Risk Management Training
Working with people who pose significant risks to themselves or others is one of the most important and challenging dynamics that face services users, carers and a range of different professionals. Understandably, it causes concern for individuals, families and communities.
This training examines personal beliefs and definitions about risk and blends these with lessons learned from inquiry reports, governmental studies, policy initiatives and ‘best practice’.
What will Participants Achieve?
At the end of the training participants will be able to:
Appreciate the ‘must do’ of involving the service user and carers or significant others in the assessment and delivery of the care plan.
Produce holistic care plans that promote social inclusion and recovery.
Translate risk assessment into pragmatic risk management plans, including crisis and contingency plans.
Gain greater knowledge of supporting policies and procedures involved.
Undertake a diagnostic on how risky their teams or services are; and what they can do to improve the delivery of effective risk management.

Programme History and Evaluations

Wendy and Robert have delivered Risk Assessment and Risk Management Training to multi-professional audiences in Yorkshire, the East and West Midlands over the past 4 years.

They will be presenting this training throughout England and have worked with over 1500 professionals, including Consultant Psychiatrists, Consultant Psychologists, Approved Social Workers, social care staff, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Probation Officers, Police, Prison In-reach and support workers of every caliber. Audiences have also included service users, professional carers and a range of different voluntary sector providers. Comments received from participants in evaluating this training include:

“Couldn’t all training be run like this?”

“Undoubtedly the best risk management course I have attended.”

“I would recommend this course to colleagues.”

“Teaching methods were excellent and kept my attention. Best course attended in 9 years training!”

“A very enjoyable two days – I have found the content invaluable”.

“Well paced, interesting, one of the best training programmes I have ever attended. It's really well put together. Thank-you! ”

What the programme addresses

Places the service user and informal caring support networks at the centre of the assessment and care planning processes.

Presents theoretical & operational aspects of risk management, balancing the need for therapeutic risk-taking with the need to minimise negative outcomes for service users, informal &/or professional carers.

Enables participants to assess and manage risks within the care planning process in order to promote ‘defensible decisions’.

Supports an open exploration of equality and diversity issues and how the profile of gender, culture and social networks contribute to a fuller understanding of behaviour, recovery and risks.

Considers the needs of teams, services and organisations to be confident in their management of risk

Meets the requirements of current national health and social care policy
How is the training delivered?
Using a range of interactive techniques and case study material, we support participants to build upon, expand their knowledge and confidence about how risks are assessed and managed; and how to develop and distinguish crisis from contingency plans. This is done to redress risk aversion, a pernicious theme within health and social care settings. We enable participants the opportunity to work through the entire Care planning process, balancing risk with recovery.
