NDT training for
independent support brokers

The National Development Team offers training for independent support brokers that we confidently believe is the most comprehensive, well-developed, and authoritative package of its kind in the UK.

The training builds on direct involvement in the international development of individualised funding and support brokerage, including the design and delivery of training for brokers in Southern California. It has been tested and refined through delivery as part of the Life Planning projects in Brent and North Somerset, and is fully consistent with the draft requiremwents for broker training produced by the National Brokerage Network.

The training reflects this pedigree, and offers features that have been required to meet the requirements of the Life Planning projects. Generally these will add to the quality and value of the training, but the exact content and format will still, of course, need to be adapted to local circumstances and requirements.

The trainers

  Steve Dowson (Director of Development, NDT)
Steve has been an advocate of individual funding and support brokerage for over fifteen years, and has been a significant contributor to the global development of individualised funding (IF) and support brokerage programmes. His work on IF included consultancy in North America and Australia, programme planning for the First International Conference on Self-Determination and Individualised Funding in Seattle (2000) and consultancy over three years to the IF program in San Diego. Since joining the NDT he has been lead consultant for the Life Planning projects in Brent and North Somerset.

Alison Short
Alison is a skilled person-centred planning facilitator and trainer, and also works extensively with Helen Sanderson Associates. She was the lead author of Families Leading Planning; a resource pack to enable families to take the lead in person centred planning with and for people with disabilities that they love. Her knowledge of IF and brokerage is also extensive: she works as a broker; has acted as consultant and trainer with the Life Planning projects; was national lead on support brokerage for the In Control programme, and is now regional coordinator for the National Brokerage Network for the South West.

Costs

  The cost of the training needs to be agreed for each training course, as it will be affected by a number of factors, and in particular –

whether the programme needs to be adapted for the participant group or context;

whether the training will include assessment for accreditation;

the number of participants;

the amount of support to be provided in planning and follow-up.
  Ideally, all the training will be delivered jointly by both trainers, and this is especially important with larger groups, and/or when assessment is required.
