Effective person-centred planning does not just happen when organisations provide a rolling staff training programme, it happens when the person and those who support and care about them make a promise to take the first steps in bringing about change.
If person-centred planning is to have a real impact on people’s lives, organisations have to be prepared to change the way they deliver services and empower people who use their services to have more control over how planning takes place. It does not simply mean setting up a bureaucratic paper-based planning system ‘where one size fits everyone’ - it is about providing the opportunity for taking a flexible approach to planning which is matched/suited to each different individual and those who support and care about them. So training in person-centred planning that is effective has to go hand in hand with person-centred organisational change.

This is where the NDT can help:

We provide a wide range of training workshops in person-centred planning, backed up by many years of experience and strong links to best practice and new developments.

The range of NDT training opportunities and resources is set within a package of six key elements of person-centred planning as shown in the diagram. Please click on the area you are interested in to see more details.

Workshop options
These workshops can be attended as a package, one at a time, in stages under specific headings or designed to suit individual requirements.

Training style
The training consists of a mixture of short presentations, with much of the time spent in group work, in order to allow time for reflection, discussion, and the development of creative ideas for action.

The NDT is encouraging organisations to support the idea of using the workshops to provide an opportunity for the person (whatever their disability may be) and their circle of support to attend the workshop together - so that the planning can begin in reality as the workshop progresses. The circle of support usually includes key staff who work closely with the person and know them well.

If only staff are attending the training - as part of learning about planning, participants are encouraged to look at their own lives and explore what this can teach them about planning with people who use their services.

Intended participants
The training is aimed at statutory, voluntary or independent sector organisations as well as people who use services and/or their families and carers. (The NDT does not provide ‘one off’ training places to individual applicants.).
